Diary Event

Gerard McCrory (20) was a very popular winner at the weekend in winning Mr Paul O’Hare’s Presidents prize with a solid 40pts which was good enough, but only on break of tie. Conditions on the day were unexpectedly good with contingency measures in place if the expected heavy downpours arrived, remarkably however these were not needed and somehow we missed the flooding that seemed to be going on all around us, yes the wind picked up but the entire field of 184 players somehow got round dry! The runner up on the day was Martin McCallion (20) also with 40pts, third place went to Mark McColgan (5) with 39pts, Mark registered three birdie 2’s on his card, John McMenamin (15) was fourth also with 39pts,with Johnathan McGillion (12) taking the final Nett prize with 38pts. The gross prize went to Cathal Patton (7) with 31 gross points. In the over 60’s category the winner was Brian O’Kane with 37pts, the runner up was Jim Potts with 36 pts. The nines were claimed by Andrew Connolly and Marc Brolly. Being Presidents day there were special category prizes for non-qualifying members, the winner in the section was Patrick McGranaghan (4) who was level par on the day returning 40pts, second was Kieran McShane (27) also with a very good 40pts. President Paul in his excellent speech thanked all the members, council and club staff for the courtesy that had been extended to him this year throughout his Presidency of the club and congratulated all who had helped to make this another successful year for our club.

Murphy’s on The Green Open
Popular local Restaurant “Murphy’s on the Green were last Thursdays Sponsors. Sean MacIntyre (12) was the man in form with a great total of 43pts which was good enough by two from the runner up the ever improving Niall Kelly (19) third place went to Garry McLaughlin (20) with 40pts, Garry is another relatively new player and one also showing plenty of potential, the gross prize went to Patrick McGranaghan (4) with 33 gross points.

Declan Devine Monday Open (30th July 2018)
The penultimate Declan Devine Monday open qualifying series took place on Monday past with a late challenge now looming to qualify for the final day on Sunday 12th August. This week’s winner was Foncie McNally with an outstanding 45 pts the runner up was Head bar Stewart Stephen Kennedy (10) with 39pts, third went to Stephen Mc Cay(5) with 38pts (15) these three players all qualify, the gross winner was Kevin Gallagher(5) with 31 gross points.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s Ladies winner was Competition secretary Caren Corry(29) who won the Herdman cup with an excellent return of 66 Nett,the winner in category one was Norma Brogan (15) with 67 Nett, the winner in category two was Imelda Doherty (32).

Aiden Boyle's Jimmy Bruen team lost out 4 matches to one on Monday at Donegal golf club to Castlehume in the Ulster Semi-final in a very close match that could have went in any direction. The Conway Cup team have also bowed out at the semi-final stage losing out over the two legs to Black Lion golf club. Tommy Forbes's O'Hare Cup secured a place in the Final after securing the required 2 points on the front nines in Aughnacloy after a 14.5 - 1.5 victory in the home leg.

The winner of the £50 bar credit draw this week was Paul O’Neill The timesheet for the 2nd annual Jimmy Duncan Memorial is available on BRS and is filling up fast! There will be music in the club on Sunday night with Thomas Gillespie from 8pm-10-30pm. Tickets are now on sale from Tommy or at the office or bar for the “Bay city Rollerworld & the Smokie Experience” show on Saturday 29th September priced at only £12.50 for this amazing show.

The clubs lower handicap players were in dominant form on Saturday at Strabane in the “Dixies Bar” sponsored stableford event which had a fantastic entry of close to 200 golfers. The winner was Caolan Crawford (4) who has been in sparkling form this season and he returned a remarkable 43pts which was three under gross for his round birdies at the 1st, 4th,5th,6th & 10th more than made up for the two bogies on his fantastic card, the runner up only one point behind was Aidan Boyle (4) he was two under gross for his round which included six birdies! Third place went to Jordan Arthur (6) with 41pts, just one over gross, fourth went to Stephen McCay (6) also with 41pts and one over par, the only player outside of category one was Tommy Forbes (15) who had an excellent finish to also total 41pts. Not to be outdone on this day of brilliant scoring however was Conal Cooke playing of one handicap, he took the gross with a brilliant four under par round of 14 pars and four birdies, the nines went to Lewis Jones(11) with 23pts for the first nine and to Brian Ferguson(22) with 22pts for the back nine. The presentation for this event will take place this Friday night at the club at 8.30pm,also there are presentations taking place for Mark James Menswear, Mitchell’s Meats, McBrearty’s Mace Store and the Frylite Ltd. Teams, all winners are asked to be in attendance or at least have a representative arranged to collect your prize.

J.C. Barbers Intermediate Scratch cup
The inaugural Intermediate scratch cup was played at the club on Sunday past over 27 holes and it turned out to be a major success, superbly orchestrated by Johnathan McGillian from J.C .Barbers Strabane and his team Patrick McCrossan, Peter Doherty & Freddie Patterson who all left no stones unturned in providing a remarkably well run and successful event. The popular winner was Lewis Jones a member of the clubs green-keeping team and in fact he had actually cut the greens at 5.30am that morning!
Lewis dominated the scoring with an excellent five over par first 18 holes that saw him lead the gross and Nett section, he maintained his solid form over the second round 9 holes to run out a clear winner of the main competition by a very impressive four strokes from his playing partner James McGhee and Declan McDonnell who finished in second and third respectfully on 118, fourth gross went to David Mullen on 119 with Declan Devine fifth with 121. In the nett section Mickey Arnold was the winner with 91 Nett, second was Rodney Dolan with 93 Nett, Ryan Patton took third with 97 Nett the same total as fourth placed Vincent Bradley with Joe Doherty in fifth in this section with 98 Nett. The longest drive went to John McCallion, with the nearest the pin prizes going to John Maxwell and Michael Neeson. In addition to the excellent prizes on the day £1,300 was raised for Strabane Mental Health centre.

Mitchell Meats Thursday Open
118 players entered last Thursday’s competition kindly sponsored by Mitchell Meats, the winner playing in one of the last groups on the course was Brian Forrester (17) he was the clear winner by four points after posting a fantastic 45pts, the runner up was Club President Paul O’Hare (12) with 41 pts who with his President’s day coming up this Saturday has hit a great run of scoring himself in recent weeks, best wishes to Paul for a great day on Saturday! Third place in the Mitchell meats went to Fred McGavigan with a level par round that converted to 40pts, the gross went to Caolan Crawford who was serving notice of what was to come,he too had a level par round which was 36 gross pts.

Declan Devine Monday Open (23rd July)
After Mondays competition there are only two more qualifying Mondays for the Declan Devine Frozen Foods Monday open final day on the 12th August, in the latest competition winner was visiting player from Ballybofey G.C. Michael Kelly (9) with 39pts, the runner up was Paul O’Reilly (6) with 38 pts with Damian McCrossan (18) in third also with 38pts, The best visitor was Connor McCarron (17) with 34 pts, these players now qualify for the final day, the gross again went to the young man in form Caolan Crawford (3) with 34 gross pts.
Team News

Only two men’s teams in action this past week Declan Devines North-West League team won at Greencastle G.C 2-5 which keeps them very well placed in the tournament, Tommy Forbes’s O’Hare cup team had a 14.5-1.5 win over Aughnacloy G.C on Monday evening and are well placed going into the second leg of that Tyrone & Fermanagh Semi-final,

Good luck to Aidan Boyle & Senan Roarty who have their Jimmy Bruen squad in action next Monday in the Ulster Semi-final at Murvagh G.C. where they will play Castlehume G.C. also playing this coming weekend are the Donegal Senior League team who play Portsalon G.C this Sunday at 2.30pm,the Donegal Junior team are also out on Sunday where they will play Gweedore G.C at 1pm also on Sunday, good luck also to Frankie Connolly’s Conway cup who are in Co.Cavan to play Black Lion G.C in their second leg semi-final trying to protect a slender 8.5-7.5 lead.

Donna’s Flowerbox open
The Ladies had their open day on Tuesday past kindly sponsored once again by Donna Doherty of Donna’s Flowerbox Strabane, the winner with a remarkable score of 45 pts was Marion O’Reilly (20) Marion was in the same three-ball as the unlucky runner up Jennifer Rouse (8) who had 43 pts, just two over par! Geraldine Masterson had another great score to take third with 41pts, Mandy Coyne (8) was the gross winner with 30 Gross pts.
Last Wednesday’s mixed foursomes was won by Mary Duffy & club president Paul O’Hare with 32 pts for the 13 holes in play, the runners up were Debbie McDaid & Gerry Casey with 29 pts with Margaret Wolfe & Brian O’Kane in third also with 29 pts. Please note that the Presidents Mixed Foursomes will now be played on Wednesday 1st August.
There is music & dancing in the clubhouse on Saturday night with “T-Junction” all members are invited after the meal at approximately 10pm.

Martin McDermott (6) was the winner of Saturdays competition with an excellent 40pts, a superb 2 under gross inward nine gave him the verdict in a very close contest where only one shot separated the top nine golfers. The runner up was Mark McColgan (6) who had led throughout the day and only missing out on countback. Third place went to Shaun McGarrigle (9) another with 40pts, Brian Cairns (21) came fourth also with 40 pts with Michael McGarrigle again featuring to take the final Nett prize with 39pts. The gross prize for second consecutive week went to went to Peter Doherty (5) with a two over total and 34 gross pts, the nines were claimed by Darius Bogle with 21pts for the front nine & Brian O’Kane who had 23pts on his card for the back nine.

McBrearty’s Mace Store open (Thursday 12th July 2018)
Freddie Patterson (9) was the winner in Thursdays open kindly sponsored by McBrearty’s Mace store Melmount Road, Freddie returned an excellent 42pts to win by a point from the runner up Kieron Neeson (9) with Dr Ciaran Kelly in third place with 40pts the gross winner was Fred McGavigan (4) with a one over par 35 gross.

Declan Devine Monday Open (16th July 2018)
Rodney Dolan (18) was the winner of the Latest Declan Devine Monday Open with a solid 41pts,the runner up was Neil Coulter (18) with 39pts with Martin Finlay (19) in third also with 39pts,the latest qualifiers for the final day on the 12th August are Rodney Dolan, Martin Finlay and James Harron along with Mondays leading visiting player Michael McNally. Congratulations to Shane McLaughlin who recorded a hole in one at the second hole on Monday with the perfect 7 iron shot.

Ladies Golf
There was some tremendous scoring by the ladies in last week’s Foyle Hospice charity event, the winner was Lady Vice-Captain Geraldine Masterson(22) with 44pts,the winner in category one was Heather Mitchell (20) with 43pts with category two going to Annette Patton (30) with 40pts.

Captains mixed foursomes
Club Captain Frankie Houston’s Mixed foursomes was played last Wednesday night with an excellent entry, the winners were Carole McFeeters & Denis Porter with 34pts for the 13 holes in play, the runners up also with 34pts were Ann McCrory & Declan McDonnell, third went to Geraldine McCrory and Vice-Captain Declan Doherty with 33 pts, the gross went to Mary Gallagher & Paul Bogle. The entry sheets for the Presidents mixed foursomes are still posted in both notice boards, it will be played next Wednesday 25th July. In Ladies team news Adeline Gibson’s intermediate foursomes team lost 2 matches to one at home in the Ulster quarter final to Roe Park Ladies and will have it all to do in the second leg, but are not without hope as they are up on holes by a total of four.
In Men’s teams our Jimmy Bruen team have advanced to the Ulster Semi-final after a great win on Sunday at Armagh G.C. against Clandeboye G.C. winning the first three matches to take the tie, the other two matches were also well placed. Aidan Boyle’s & Senan Roarty’s men will now meet Castlehume G.C. at a date and venue yet to be decided.

Declan Devine Monday open (9th July 2018)
There was a good turnout for this week’s Declan Devine Frozen Foods open, it was won in commanding fashion by Francie Conwell (15) with 44 pts, the runner up was Terry Conroy (13) with 41 pts and Kevin McGinley (10) in third with 40 pts, first and third positions along with fourth placed Vincent Bradley qualify for the final day as Terry Conroy has already booked his place on Sun 12th August, also qualifying is visiting player Cathal McGee who had 39pts,the gross on Monday went to Jamie Foley with 30 gross pts.
In team news this week Frankie Connolly’s Conway cup team have it all to do in their away leg of that competition with Castlehume G.C, Frankie’s men had an 8.5-7.5 narrow win on Sunday in the home leg. Only a few places remain for the Intermediate Scratch cup 10-18 handicaps on Sunday 22nd July, the entry sheets are still posted or contact Johnathan McGillian. The BRS is now also available for entries for the 2nd annual Jimmy Duncan memorial Ladies & gents open on Sunday 5th August with £1000 in prizes up for grabs.
Ladies Golf
Last week’s Ladies competition was the Captains prize to the ladies branch, the winner was Betty Kelly (31) with 68 Nett, the category winners were Maeve Corry (23) with 70 Nett in Cat one and Debbie McDaid (30) with 70 Nett in Cat two.
This week’s £50 bar credit draw was won by the Captains prize winner Liam McGinley, which should go some way to helping him buy a drink for the bar!
There are presentations at the club this coming Friday night 13th July at 8.30pm Sharp, the prizes for the following will be presented; Hugh Harley Memorial, John Fahy & Co Solicitors, Sean Devine Sand and Gravel and AGL Accountants, all winners or a representative are asked to be in attendance.

Frylite Ltd. Champagne Scramble (Sun 1st July ’18)
The annual Frylite Champagne scramble was played on Sunday past, the runaway winners were Peter Doherty, Lewis Jones, Dermott Corry and Frankie Connolly with 105 pts, their eye catching total was good enough by 6pts from the runners up Paul O’Reilly, Danny Duffy, Isobel Duffy and Marion O’Reilly the highlight of their score was a massive nine points recorded at the par 5 tenth Hole! Third place with 98 pts were Paddy O’Kane, Senan Roarty, Anthony Brennan & Brian Forrester.

Declan Devine Monday Open (2nd July ’18)
This week’s winner of the Declan Devine Frozen foods open was Liam Curry (11) with 41pts, the runner up was Club President Paul O’Hare with 40 pts with Stewart McFeeters in third with 38 pts, the best visitor on the day was Sean O’Kane all four players qualify for the final day on Sunday 12th August.

The Club lotto bonus ball will take place this Saturday night if all the numbers are sold, the entry is £20 with first prize £600,the other numbers drawn will have their entry returned, numbers can be purchased at the club bar.

This week’s £50 bar credit draw winner was Liam McKane.
Finally best wishes for a fantastic day are extended to our Captain Frankie Houston who will host his Captains day this coming Saturday at the club, the music will be provided later by “Riff Raff 2” all members are very welcome after 10.30pm for the presentations & dancing.
